Once you do that, then you can turn the little wheel behind the shutter button. When you do that observe the LCD screen and you will notice that the shutter time setting changes. This number represent a fraction, something like 1/60, and it represents the time the shutter remains open to take the picture. If the number is very small, like 1/4000, that means that the shutter will be open for that very short amount of time in seconds, or if it is a number like 2"5 then the shutter will be open for that amount of time in seconds, that is two seconds and a half. For example, my deviation [link] shows a shutter speed of 1 second, that is because I took the picture when the camera was set at Tv and the shutter speed read 1" that is one second. I must say that if you want to take pictures of traffic with the shutter opened for a long period of time, you must take them with a tripod, or your pictures will be very blurred. In the deviations mentioned above, I used no tripod, but the car was moving fast on a motionless road. So the effect came from my movement rather than from the movement of the setting. In those cases, well, it won't matter if you use a tripod because you are moving anyway. One last thing, if you open your shutter for a long period of time and there is too much light around you or it is in daylight, your picture will appear too bright, almost too bright to be able to see anything.
